This is It

THIS IS IT! – Make the most of every moment
Focus your attention on the present moment. Keep a positive attitude.

This Is It! is about focusing on NOW instead of later, or next week, or next month, or next year, or yesterday, etc., and making the most of it. A positive This Is It! attitude can make everything we do and every day productive, fulfilling, and fun!

Life is full of distractions and opportunities to do something else, something other than what we’re doing now. Many of us spend a lot of time thinking about those other things. Instead of making what we’re doing now “it” our focus is often elsewhere—on things we wanted to do, could have done, should have done, or want to do “sometime.” Whenever our thoughts are occupied with something other than what we’re doing, we miss what’s going on around us in the moment … while we’re waiting for the next moment to arrive the present moment slips away.

1st Grade

When introducing stamina in Daily 5, we talk in depth about This Is It. We only have this time to learn to be the best reader and writer we can. We also use the word "urgency" and build anchor charts talking about how important it is to use our time wisely.

2nd Grade

3rd Grade

Third grade students talk about the importance of This Is It throughout the year. We discuss the importance of doing our best on all assignments and tasks. We know there are many things in life that we may not want to do, but doing our best and putting forth our best effort, will result in a positive outcome.

4th Grade

In preparation for STAAR testing we watched the Kid President "Pep Talk" video and made motivational Posters for the other classes to encourage them to do well and understand that "this is it" (the time to show their learning!)

5th Grade

Once every nine-week period, we have a class discussion about the ability to start each nine week period a-new. Students set goals and seize (or start!) positive momentum in their academics.

We have a student of the month recognition where each student selected receives a token prize and gets their picture taken. Students have to guess who the honoree is based on the teacher's description of the student's good character qualities.

Our class earns time for a group game that everyone enjoys.

Art
Like making a commitment to finish a project we discuss having a “This Is It” attitude. We need to deal with the here and now. This is it today. Don’t miss out on making something you can be proud of.

Support

Library
Many books about sports figures encourage students to do the best that they can, NOW! Books about Jackie Robinson, Wilma Rudolph, Nolan Ryan, Tim Duncan, and others, encourage students to work hard and do their best. Other fiction books with a sports theme about kids who triumphed and worked hard include One Handed Catch, Goal, One-Minute Drill, Football Hero, and many more.
Resource
In our resource room, we learn about perseverance. We read stories such as Uncle Ed's Barbershop, Helen Keller and Wilma Unlimited that models fictional characters and real people not giving up in spite of ongoing difficulties. We apply that characteristic to our daily lives in terms of academics and social situations. The students are encouraged to remember that even though things may be hard for them, they must keep trying and look for encouragement and support in the examples of others.
